Donald Frye

The Reverend Donald Frye has served at Saint James since July 2008 and loves serving the people of Saint James parish.

A native of Akron, Ohio, Fr. Don moved to Chicago in 1990 for a six month job assignment having moved from New York City where he served two years as an urban missionary.  Fr. Don served homeless single men and women, and welfare moms and their children.  He worked 20 years in book publishing and marketing for InterVarsity Press and the American Medical Association before being ordained to the priesthood in 2005.

Fr. Don is actively involved in the community as a member of Dundee Twp. Lions Club and Board Member of the Elgin Community Crisis Center.  He has served on the Cathedral Chapter of Saint James Cathedral, the cathedral church for the Diocese of Chicago, as well as the Chaplain to the Dean's Search Committee.  Fr. Don was a member of the Diocesan Clergy Health Insurance committee and volunteer at Holy Family Ministry School in the North Lawndale neighborhood of Chicago.  Fr. Don is also a Registry Chaplain at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, IL..

Don is passionate about seeing people connect with God and each other in peace and justice ministry - both in the parish and out in the community.  His interests include reading, movies, collecting fountain pens, calligraphy, travel, cooking, and cycling.  Fr. Don and his husband, David Shallow, live in Naperville where they reside with their three Daschunds - Fritz, Owen, and Bob.

Parish Musician

Luke Engen

Luke Engen is a native of Elgin, IL and became the Parish Musician at Saint James in February of 2018.  Luke attended Judson University in Elgin where he completed the Performance Certificate in Music Program with an emphasis in organ under Dr. Dale Voelker. He also studied organ privately with Dr. David Christiansen. Before coming to Saint James, Luke was the handbell choir director and assistant organist at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Elgin since 2013. Additionally, Luke sings tenor with the Elgin Master Chorale.

Luke attended Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin and the Harry Wendelstedt School for Umpires in Daytona Beach, Florida. He spent four years in professional baseball working as an umpire for the California, Midwest, New York-Penn, Appalachian, and Gulf Coast Leagues. Currently, Luke teaches Spanish at Dundee-Crown High School.
